Deryck Stephen Crowther RBA ARCA Listed British artist 1922-2007 Royal Scholarship to RCA in 1941. Awarded ARCA in 1949 after War Service. Member RBA in 1958. Exhibits at RBA, RA, RP, Contemporary Portrait Society, Leicester Galleries London (Artists of Fame and of Promise). Senior Member RBA 1999. Several one-man exhibitions; work reproduced in many books. Stephen Crowther was born in Sheffield in 1922. He was educated at De la Salle College, Sheffield, studied art at Sheffield College of art and gained a Royal Scholarship to the Royal College of Art (1941, Ambleside). After war service (1941-46) resumed studies at Royal College of Art. Awarded ARCA 1949. Elected member of Royal Society of British Artists 1958. Exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, The Royal Society of Portrait Painters, The Contemporary Portrait Society, the former Stone Gallery, Newcastle and the Leicester Galleries, London (Artists of Fame and Promise), the former Austin Hayes Gallery, York and several one-man exhibitions in provincial galleries. His work has been reproduced in many books. Elected senior member of the Royal Society of British Artists, 1999. Two portraits hung in RA 2000. He said of his work at a retrospective exhibition in 2002 for his 80th birthday, “ That it is mainly autobiographical, family portraits, portraits of friends, local scenes and commissioned work. The work has been described as ‘Romantic Realism’ and although it went through a more abstract phase at one time on the whole I am looking for the poetry of subject matter as well as the dynamic design in composition.
